January Meeting

Join us this Thursday, January 21st at 7pm for our first monthly meeting of 2010!

Need some help kick-starting your New Year's Resolutions? Join us for roundtable discussions on eating healthy, exercising, saving money, spirituality, and quality family time. Get the best advice from moms you know and admire!

Respond to one question below, a couple, or all of them! I know you all have plenty of great ideas to share. As we have done in past months, one door prize on Thursday will be awarded to someone who posts a comment here.

1. Share some ideas about healthy eating. Do you have any 'tricks' that you use to make sure you get all of your veggies in each day? What about getting kids to each veggies? Do you have any yummy recipes to share?

2. Share some ideas about exercise. Have you found a program that works great for you? When do you find the time?

3. Share some ideas about saving money. Does your household run on a strict budget? What are your tricks for cutting corners?

4. Share some ideas about spirituality. What things do you do on your own, with your spouse, as a family?

5. Share some ideas about quality family time. Do you plan events or just figure things out as you go? How often do you have family activities.

Here's some answers on things that work for us...as far as budget goes, we are definitely on one - one trick we use is that just because it is on sale does not mean you need to buy it. Sometimes just not going shopping allows you to save money. As far as veggies go - never stop offering them. We have a rule in our house that you can either eat what is served or you can have cottage cheese. If that doesn't work then you must not be hungry! It can also help to always fix 2 veggies so they can choose one. If you always have the heatlhy stuff there, they will eventually eat it - at least in my experience. Same with snacks - if you offer something healthy, or nothing at all - they will usually go for the healthy, which is a great time to get the fruits in. Now, someone write some advice for me!

I agree with Stephanie on the not going shopping thing. Stay out of the stores! That's the best defense against all of those impulse "bargain" purchases - they all add up and most of the time we don't really need that stuff anyway. Try to just shop once a week and it helps to have a list and just stick with it.

Healthy eating tips....don't buy anything "bad" for you - if it's not in the house, then you can't eat it. Don't go to the grocery store when you are hungry. Also, have healthy foods (like carrots & celery or fruit) already cut-up and easy to grab from the fridge.

Hum, my tricks or advice..... Have one Left over meal a week that allows you to pull everything out of the fridge that is left over from the week. It may only be one serving of rice, one chicken breast, etc. You will be suprized how much you actually have. I typically always have enough for everyone to have a meat, veggie, fruit, starch. We call it our Encore meal or eating Al a Carte. They kids think it is really cool that they pick what they want to eat. It's kind of like going to a buffet restaurant :)
We also have a general rule. If you don't like what is for dinner you can always have carrot sticks, apple, or something healthy. And for those of you who also have children like mine who believe there should be a dessert with lunch and dinner. We serve fruit as dessert or sometimes a sweet cereal like Lucky Charms. It has made them look at fruit differently :) And they think they are getting away with something by having cereal at dinner time.
My last piece of advice is to watch out for value sizes. They are not always a good deal. Sometimes they actually cost more per unit and a lot of times the item will go bad before you can use it all.
Hope this was helpful.
