Everyday strive for:
10 minutes prayer
20 minutes reading (if you stop reading/learning you will stop growing
30 minutes of chores - discipline

Positive reinforcements. Each child is different. What motivates your kids? What is their "currency"?

It's Recipe Time Again!!

Baby it's cold outside and we could all use some warm recipes to help get us through these chilly months! We had a great turnout for recipes last year when we shared so please share some more in the comment section to help get us in the cooking mood!

Summer Nanny????

If anyone knows, or hears of a college-aged girl that is looking for a summer babysitting job, please let me know! I need someone to watch my girls for the summer, transport to VBS, and swim lessons (thus, have to have own car), and have fun with them. I figured I would put it on the blog and hopefully someone will read it!!

DECEMBER 2010 ACTIVITIES

The next Kid’s Activity is Friday, December 3, 2010: Its getting cold outside, so lets warm up with our kids inside! Meet at 9:30-11:30 am at Sylvester Powell Community Center ( 6200 Martway St. Mission , KS ) for Open Gym. Inflatables, play mats, and climbing structures are available for small children: from crawlers to Kindergarten age. The cost is $2/child (parents are free, and a 25% discount punch card is available). No RSVP is necessary, but feel free to contact Kathy White.

Mark your calendars! The next Mom's Time Out will be at 7pm on December 7th at the Old Chicago at 11721 Metcalf Avenue. Bring a $5-$10 Christmas ornament to exchange and come for a fun evening out with your friends! Watch your e-mail or RSVP to Andrea Noonan.
Also mark your calendars for a cosmetics demonstration with a Smashbox make-up artist on December 13th. More information to follow.

Santa Claus is coming to St. Elizabeth's Hall December 19th! Saint Gerald's Circle will be providing sugar cookies to decorate and will be selling fun craft projects for the children at the Knights of Columbus Breakfast. We will need members' help in donating sugar cookies and frosting, as well as volunteers to help out at the table that morning.

In honor of Veterans Day

Snack Lunches
I put my carry-on in the luggage compartment and sat down in my assigned seat. It was going to be a long flight. 'I'm glad I have a good book to read. Perhaps I will get a short nap,' I thought.

Just before take-off, a line of soldiers came down the aisle and filled all the vacant seats, totally surrounding me. I decided to start a conversation.

'Where are you headed?' I asked the soldier seated nearest to
me. 'Petawawa. We'll be there for two weeks for special training, and then we're being deployed to Afghanistan.'

After flying for about an hour, an announcement was made that sack lunches were available for five dollars. It would be several hours before we reached the east, and I quickly decided a lunch would help pass the time...

As I reached for my wallet, I overheard a soldier ask his buddy if he planned to buy lunch. 'No, that seems like a lot of money for just a sack lunch. Probably wouldn't be worth five bucks. I'll wait till we get to base.' His friend agreed.

I looked around at the other soldiers None were buying lunch. I walked to the back of the plane and handed the flight attendant a fifty dollar bill. 'Take a lunch to all those soldiers.' She grabbed my arms and squeezed tightly. Her eyes wet with tears, she thanked me. 'My son was a soldier in Iraq ; it's almost like you are doing it for him.'

Picking up ten sacks, she headed up the aisle to where the soldiers were seated. She stopped at my seat and asked, 'Which do you like best - beef or chicken?'
'Chicken,' I replied, wondering why she asked. She turned and went to the front of plane, returning a minute later with a dinner plate from first class.

'This is your thanks.'

After we finished eating, I went again to the back of the plane, heading for the rest room. A man stopped me. 'I saw what you did I want to be part of it. Here, take this.' He handed me twenty-five dollars.

Soon after I returned to my seat, I saw the Flight Captain coming down the aisle, looking at the aisle numbers as he walked, I hoped he was not looking for me, but noticed he was looking at the numbers only on my side of the plane. When he got to my row he stopped, smiled, held out his hand and said, 'I want to shake your hand.' Quickly unfastening my seatbelt I stood and took the Captain's hand. With a booming voice he said, 'I was a soldier and I was a military pilot. Once, someone bought me a lunch. It was an act of kindness I never forgot.' I was embarrassed when applause was heard from all of the passengers.

Later I walked to the front of the plane so I could stretch my legs. A man who was seated about six rows in front of me reached out his hand, wanting to shake mine. He left another twenty-five dollars in my palm.

When we landed I gathered my belongings and started to deplane. Waiting just inside the airplane door was a man who stopped me, put something in my shirt pocket,turned, and walked away without saying a word. Another twenty-five dollars!

Upon entering the terminal, I saw the soldiers gathering for their trip to the base. I walked over to them and handed them seventy-five dollars. 'It will take you some time to reach the base. It will be about time for a sandwich. God Bless You.'

Ten young men left that flight feeling the love and respect of their fellow travelers.

As I walked briskly to my car, I whispered a prayer for their safe return. These soldiers were giving their all for our country. I could only give them a couple of
meals. It seemed so little...

A veteran is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America ' for an amount of 'up to and including my life.'

That is Honor, and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand it.'

St. Gerard's Feast Day

HALLOWEEN COSTUME EXCHANGE

This is the best way to beg and borrow a Halloween costume for your wee one. If you are looking for something in particular, or have something to share, post it here!

I just got my son a pirate costume but he would like a sword to go with it. Does anyone have one we can borrow?

My daughter (8 yrs old) who wears 6X is looking for a costume - not sure what - but if anyone has any that might fit - let me know!

I have a poodle skirt (not sure of the size - 22-23 inch waist - 17 inches in length) - my mom made it for me when I was a kid.
I have a Pink Princess size Small (3-4 yrs).
I think I also have fairy wings.

I just received this today and loved it! Hope it makes you smile during your crazy day as much as it made me.....and realize that God is good and knows our hearts, Moms! :)

Whenever your children are out of control, you can take comfort from the thought that even God's omnipotence did not extend to His own children.

After creating heaven and earth, God created Adam and Eve.

And the first thing he said was ' DON'T!'

'Don't what?' Adam replied.

'Don't eat the forbidden fruit.' God said.

'Forbidden fruit? We have forbidden fruit?
Hey Eve… we have forbidden fruit! '

‘No Way!'

'Yes way! '

'Do NOT eat the fruit! said God.

'Why? '

'Because I am your Father and I said so! ' God replied,
wondering why He hadn't stopped creation after making the elephants

A few minutes later, God saw His children having an apple break
and He was ticked! 'Didn't I tell you not to eat the fruit?'
God asked.

'Uh huh,' Adam replied.

'Then why did you?' said the Father.

'I don't know,' said Eve.

'She started it!' Adam said.

'Did not!'

'Did too!'

'DID NOT!'

Having had it with the two of them, God's punishment was that Adam and Eve

should have children of their own. Thus the pattern was set and it has never changed.

If you have persistently and lovingly tried to give children wisdom and they haven't taken it,

don't be hard on yourself.

If God had trouble raising children, what makes you think it would be a piece of cake for you?

50 Life Lessons

Some of my favorite life lessons are below. It's always nice to be reminded of them. Do you have a life lesson you would like to share?

1. Life isn't fair, but it's still good.

2. When in doubt, just take the next small step.

3. Life is too short to waste time hating anyone.

8. It's OK to get angry with God. He can take it.

15. Everything can change in the blink of an eye. But don't worry; God never blinks.

25. No one is in charge of your happiness except you.

27. Always choose life.

28. Forgive everyone everything.

29. What other people think of you is none of your business.

33. Believe in miracles.

34. God loves you because of who God is, not because of anything you did or didn't do.

35. Whatever doesn't kill you really does make you stronger.

36. Growing old beats the alternative - dying young.

37. Your children get only one childhood. Make it memorable.

39. Get outside every day. Miracles are waiting everywhere.

40. If we all threw our problems in a pile and saw everyone else's, we'd grab ours back.

September Meeting

Our September meeting will be here before we know it! On Thurday the 16th, we will have a speaker come to talk to us about nutrition. If there are any specific questions, please comment and we can hopefully get them answered for you that evening.

Also, we are thinking of having each of us bring an easy, healthy recipe that our families/kids actually like/eat to share with the group. I know we all get caught in a rut of the same things over and over and some new ideas from each other might be just what we all need. You can post your recipe here and we can get them combined to hand out and email to each other.

October Family Activity

On Saturday, October 2nd we will have a hayride at Shawnee Mission Park from 5:30-7:30. The first hour is a hay ride and the second hour is for roasting marshmallows and drinking apple cider. The cost will be $4 per person with 2 and under being free. Money will be collected at 5:15 on the day of the event. There is a limit of (we will have two wagons that accommodate 25-30 people each). Sign up is on a first come basis. If you want to be the first to sign up, just reply here - you can just use your first name and last initial and how many (including you) will be attending. If you sign up, you are not obligated to attend. We just need to get an idea how many people are interested and can attend on this evening. Thanks!!

BBQ Family Event

What a great turnout at the BBQ at Karen's House on Sunday, August 29th! Thanks to all who came and brought their yummy side dishes and desserts. If there is a recipe you'd like to get, respond to this post and hopefully we can get it for you!

2010 KICK OFF MEETING!!!

Don't forget our Fall 2010 Kick off meeting is this Thursday, August 26 at 7 pm! You don't want to miss out on the fellowship, food, updates for the activities this year, and of course, DOOR PRIZES!! All are welcome to meet in the Church prior to the meeting at 6:30 pm to say the Rosary with other mothers. What a beautiful way to kick off our year together as well as our children's school year! Looking for a Good Book???

Of course we are all limited on time these days with kids, but there's always time to catch up on some good books, right??:) At two recent SGC meetings, I overheard conversations discussing books you would recommend to others so why not add them to the blog to share with everyone! If you have a favorite or even one that was pretty good that you just finished, add it to the list to share with your SGC friends.

Cinderella at Theatre in the Park

On Tuesday, July 27 you and the family can see Cinderella at The Theatre in the Park (Shawnee Mission Park) FREE Just RSVP by July 20th at surewestkc.net/RSVP Gates open at 7pm, showtime at 8:30pm. Parking is also free and guests can bring lawn chairs, coolers, food and blankets. Kids can come dressed as their favorite Cinderella character. Photo opportunity with the cast after the show.

Fourth of July Fireworks

We made it out to a fireworks display for the kids in 2008. We didn't really care to go but we knew it was something the kids would like to do. After arriving at least an hour early to get a space in the parking lot, we were a little suprised that the show only lasted about 15 minutes. Is that normal for a city fireworks display? Guess I remember other displays lasting longer but maybe my memory is already going! :) The traffic getting out of the parking lot and home took longer than that! The most important thing was that the kids seemed to enjoy it! It's all about the kids right? And doing fun things for them especially on the holidays......

Anyone know of any fireworks to see besides those at the Great Mall? Or other suggestions for things to do on the 4th?

Ice Cream Dreamery

This fundraiser for The Children's Place features ice cream tastings, contests, inflatables and entertainment from groups such as The Doo Dads and Dino O'Dell and the Funky Mamas. Ice cream vendors include Sheridan's Frozen Custard, Belfonte, Blue Bell and more.
