Little Masters Big Art

Recently the mom of another daisy scout in my daughter's troop hosted a painting session for their troop. The girls had the best time and came home with some nice looking paintings.
She has classes throughout the year that you can sign up for, but since it's getting to be that time of year, she is having Christmas workshops for children 3 years and older. What a great way for the kids to learn about art and have some fun - and come home with a special gift to give to family and friends! These one-of-a-kind gifts are the best gifts to give and receive - you can't buy them in the store. The best part is that it's affordable too! Cost is only $10 per child/45 minute time slot (includes cost of supplies). For more info click on the Little Masters Big Art title above.
Here's some of the work done at a workshop.....

September Meeting

On Thursday, September 17th at 7pm we will be having a member of SGC speak to our group about Mothering and Mental health.

Being a mother in today's world is tough. There is a long list of things to do every day: attending to everyone's needs, juggling the family schedule, taking care of the household, doing errands, etc. Mothers often place taking care of themselves at the bottom of the list. Many of us struggle with guilt, anxiety and chronic dieting. Ever wondered what you can do to make things easier?

Join us as we share strategies from a little "Bag of Tricks" for reducing guilt, freeing yourself from anxiety, and making peace with food.

Here's some recommended reading...........

"Mind Over Mood" by Dennis Greenberger and Christine Padesky (for reducing anxiety and guilt)

"Intuitive Eating: A Revolutionary Program That Works" by Evelyn Tribole and Elyse Resch (for making peace with food)

"The Feeling Good Handbook" by David D. Burns

If you would like the notes taken at the meeting (along with the handouts given out) just post a comment with your email and I will get them emailed to you (then I'll delete your comment)! - Mary

Back to School

Well my kids have been in school over two weeks now and both have great teachers, but I read this email below that I got from Love & Logic and thought it was so true! Although my kids go to a public school, the school strongly believes in the Love & Logic philosophy and even sends home hand-outs with helpful Love & Logic tips and ideas.

Tough Teachers: Why Your Kids Need at Least One

Dear Insider's Club Member,

While the vast majority of educators deserve great praise for their patience, care and competence, most of us have known at least one who scowled instead of smiled, yelled instead of whispered, and pointed out our weaknesses instead of our strengths.

As parents, it's tempting to rescue our kids from such teachers…to demand that our kids be moved to another class.

My parents felt this temptation when I was in the third grade.

I still regard Mrs.___________(name deleted to protect the guilty) as one of the most negative, demanding, and cold people I've ever met.

She did me a great favor!

After the first week of school, my mom and dad patted me on the back and said, "You are so lucky. This year you're going to learn how to do something that plenty of adults haven't learned yet! This year you're going to learn all about how to get along with really tough people. We will help you with ideas."

I wasn’t impressed! But they were right!

When your kids meet Mrs. ____________, will you give them this gift…or steal it from them?

Thanks for reading!

Trip to Topeka Zoo

With the last days of summer vacation coming to a close, we decided an outing was in order. We made a trip out to the Topeka Zoo. Seemed to be the perfect time to keep the kids interested before they needed lunch. After a picnic lunch in Gage Park (just across from the Zoo), the kids played on some animal playsets and we took a ride on the train. The kids could have stayed longer but the parents were thinking it was probably time to call it a day!

Love and Logic Institute

Let Them Figure It Out - by Jim Fay

Some day your kids are going to need to figure things out for themselves. Wouldn't it be unfortunate if they found themselves in a dangerous or tempting situation when they get their first opportunity?

Universities report that this is often the case. Young adults are known to speed dial their parents, hand the cell phone to officials and say, "Talk to my mom. She will straighten this out."

Don't pass up an opportunity to give your kids practice figuring things out for themselves while they are still young. It's tempting in this fast-paced world to do things that kids could do for themselves. It's quicker, we're pressed for time, and it feels so good to help them.

But the bad news is that many parents pass up opportunity after opportunity to say, "I bet you can figure that out. Give it a try; I'll be here later if you need some help." Those parents put their kids at risk for believing unstated messages that say, "I have to do this because you are not capable."

Moon Marble Field Trip

Yesterday we took the kiddos to the Moon Marble in Bonner Springs. The kids learned how to play the game of marbles....
and got to pick out their own marbles to take home.

We even watched them make a marble!

School Uniforms

With school starting just around the corner, now is probably the best time to start thinking about school shopping. For those who attend Holy Spirit, this includes uniform shopping. For those of you who have some knowledge on this topic...would you please provide some insight.... Where to go, how much to get of what (what the boys or girls really need), when the best sales are... Really any helpful hints would be great.

Here's some advice received so far......

Boys...I bought several pair of boy's shorts from the used uniform sale at school(the date this year is on Saturday, August 22 from 7:30am-1:30pm. Sears'(Lands End) is also a great place for pants/shorts-- as they have a program that replaces pants if the pants wear out before the kids grow out of them. Children's Place has pants-- but they are not reinforced at the knee (I reinforce them myself when I find them on clearance). Wal-Mart and Target both carry the polos-- but I would not advise buying their white polos-- they don't wash well! Dennis is extremely expensive -- in my opinion-- but I have never had a problem w/ wear and tear (I bought a couple of polos w/ the Holy Spirit logo and both shorts/pants from them last year.) But definitely check out the used sale first-- and then buy what you couldn't get! - PW

Girls....
I bought my girl 2 jumpers and a few blouses, and the HS hoodie from Dennis. Two jumpers was plenty throughout the year. The best thing I like about the jumper, is they still fit a year later! And they can probably be adjusted even more for the following year, so the money I spent on the jumpers was well worth it. As far as the shirts Kohls has great quality polo shirts in red and white, and I ended up getting 2 red, 2 white, in both long and short sleeve, and that was enough for the year. But be sure to sign up on the Kohls website, they will email you a coupon that you can use towards those shirts. - KG

The Berry Patch

July 1st we took a trip out to the berry patch. We had a great turnout for the blueberry picking activity. Most of us had a great time, even though a few kids were ready to go play at the kids fun center before the picking even began.

Best Time to Discipline

Here's another email from Jim Fay I thought we all could probably use...especially this summer when the kids are at home

When to Discipline

Dear Insider's Club Member,
I met a man on the airplane who passed on some great advice. He said that he memorized the following rhyme. It played in his head many times as he raised his family. He said that every time he forgot to apply this wisdom he was disappointed with how he handled a situation.

Here it is:

"Never discipline in anger.
Never discipline in haste.
Save it for some happy day,
When both are feeling great."

One of the essential skills of Love and Logic® parents is to delay discipline long enough to cool down, think it over, seek advice if necessary, and deliver the consequence when both the adult and child are in the thinking mode.

Enjoyed playgroup at Franklin Park yesterday. A hot day, but with all of the huge trees there was plenty of shade to keep us all cool. Next Monday we'll be meeting at Leawood City Park.

Find the Calm in the Storm

With the kids being home from school on summer break there are many times already I feel like I'm going to lose it! All the crying, whining, fighting.....so when I saw these tips on the email newsletter I receive from Love & Logic I thought I should share!!!

Staying Calm: Some Love and Logic Tips

Avoiding frustration, anger, lectures, and other ineffective parenting practices is no simple task in today's hectic world. Fortunately, the following steps can help us "brainwash" ourselves into staying cool in hot situations:

Step #1: Create one calming self-statement.

Everyone needs a calming thought to carry with them as they navigate this not-so-calm world. Listed below are some examples:
Anger makes it worse.

- Anger and frustration feed misbehavior.

- Frustration fuels the fire.

- Empathy instead of anger.

- My kids will someday select my nursing home. (I love this one!)

Step #2: Post your statement where you'll see it often.

The more often you see your statement, the more likely it will pop into your head when your kids are getting on your last nerve. It's great for them to see them it too!

Step #3: Visualize yourself staying calm and using your statement.

Each night as you are falling asleep, imagine yourself in a tough parenting situation with your children…and handling it without breaking a sweat!

Thanks for reading!

We had a great turnout for a trip to a dairy farm. Lots of fun tasting the different flavored milks they make (banana, orange, strawberry, rootbeer, and of course chocolate)and a mini ice cream cone. The kids were able to pet the new calves, milk a cow and watch how the machines milk the cows. They even got a few squirts of milk at them. After the tour we had a picnic lunch near the pasture of cows. A fun day for all!

Saint Theresa is known as the Saint of the Little Ways, meaning she believed in doing the little things in life well and with great love. She is represented by roses.

Saint Theresa's Prayer
May today there be peace within.
May you trust God that you are exactly where you are meant to be.
May you not forget the infinite possibilities that are born of faith.
May you use those gifts that you have received, and pass on the love that has been given to you.
May you be confident knowing you are a child of God. Let this presence settle into your bones, and allow your soul the freedom to sing, dance, praise and love.
It is there for each and every one of us.

One Flaw in Women

God doesn't give you the people you want, He gives you the people you
NEED. To help you, to hurt you, to leave you, to love you and to make you
into the person you were meant to be.

One Flaw In Women

Women have strengths that amaze men.
They bear hardships and they carry burdens,
but they hold happiness, love and joy.

They smile when they want to scream.
They sing when they want to cry.
They cry when they are happy
and laugh when they are nervous.
They fight for what they believe in.
They stand up to injustice.

They don't take "no" for an answer
when they believe there is a better solution.

They go without so their family can have.
They go to the doctor with a frightened friend.
They love unconditionally.
They cry when their children excel
and cheer when their friends get awards.

They are happy when they hear about
a birth or a wedding.
Their hearts break when a friend dies.
They grieve at the loss of a family member,
yet they are strong when they
think there is no strength left.
They know that a hug and a kiss
can heal a broken heart.

Women come in all shapes, sizes and colors.

They'll drive, fly, walk, run or e-mail you
to show how much they care about you..

The heart of a woman is what
makes the world keep turning.

They bring joy, hope and love.
They have compassion and ideas.
They give moral support to their
family and friends.

Women have vital things to say
and everything to give.

HOWEVER, IF THERE IS ONE FLAW IN WOMEN,
IT IS THAT THEY FORGET THEIR WORTH.

Kids in Church

3-year-old Reese :
'Our Father, Who does art in heaven,
Harold is His name.
Amen.'

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A little boy was overheard praying:
'Lord, if you can't make me a better boy, don't worry about it.
I'm having a real good time like I am.'
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

After the christening of his baby brother in church,
Jason sobbed all the way home in the back seat of the car.
His father asked him three times what was wrong.
Finally, the boy replied,
'That preacher said he wanted us brought up in a Christian home,
and I wanted to stay with you guys.'

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
One particular four-year-old prayed,
'And forgive us our trash baskets
as we forgive those who put trash in our baskets.'
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

A Sunday school teacher asked her children as they
were on the way to church service,
'And why is it necessary to be quiet in church?'
One bright little girl replied,
'Because people are sleeping.'

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A mother was preparing pancakes for her sons, Kevin 5, and Ryan 3.
The boys began to argue over who would get the first pancake.
Their mother saw the opportunity for a moral lesson.
'If Jesus were sitting here, He would say,
'Let my brother have the first pancake, I can wait.'
Kevin turned to his younger brother and said,
' Ryan , you be Jesus !'
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

A father was at the beach with his children
when the four-year-old son ran up to him,
grabbed his hand, and led him to the shore
where a seagull lay dead in the sand.
'Daddy, what happened to him?' the son asked.
'He died and went to Heaven,' the Dad replied.
The boy thought a moment and then said,
'Did God throw him back down?'

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A wife invited some people to dinner.
At the table, she turned to their six-year-old daughter and said,
'Would you like to say the blessing?'
'I wouldn't know what to say,' the girl replied.
'Just say what you hear Mommy say,' the wife answered.
The daughter bowed her head and said,
'Lord, why on earth did I invite all these people to dinner?'
Sundays "OFF"?
So what are your thoughts on Sundays "off" during lent? It wasn't until recently that I heard that Sundays during lent are "off" days, and are not counted as the 40 days of lent. I always thought of that as an excuse to cheat, but now I am wondering if I should reconsider. But I feel like I've done well these past few days about not snacking between meals and not having any sweets or junk food. The one exception I did make when I was deciding on what "bad" things to remove from my consuming was that I would allow myself soda on the weekends - and when I have pizza (a pizza just doesn't taste the same if you don't have soda with it). Well yesterday I did have pizza AND it was the weekend (so I followed my rules). I hate to break my "being good" streak - and I'm actually losing the cravings for all of those sweet treats. So tell me what you think and how you've been doing so far with your lenten resolutions.
LENT
Can you believe we are only a few days away from the start of LENT? What are you (as well as your family) planning on doing during Lent this year? Giving up anything? Doing anything extra? Share your ideas with all of us who haven't completely decided yet what are plans are for this season.
My plans so far:
Going one time during the week to daily mass (with the kids).
To cut out "snacking" between meals and no candy/cookies/junk food.
Doing the Lenten Tree devotions every day.
MARRIAGE, THE SACRAMENT
LIKE THE EUCHARIST, marriage is
the giving and receiving of flesh and blood
for the life of the world,
a literal dying of self so that others may live abundantly.
LIKE BAPTISM, it is a birth into a greater communion,
a literal bestowal and revelation of life.
LIKE CONFIRMATION, it is a gradual growth
into mutual responsibility, a confirmation of
one another's being - body, soul, and spirit.
LIKE RECONCILIATION, marriage is a daily
practice and the school of forgiveness par excellence.
LIKE PRIESTHOOD, marriage becomes a ministry
of counsel and grace to another.
LIKE AN ANOINTING, as of the sick, it is a repeated
giving and receiving of healing touch.
MARRIAGE - here human flesh experiences
the wonder of divine love.
Here mutual rest becomes Sabbath refreshment,
conversation an entrance into the life of the Word,
and one another's company a presentiment
of the life of the Trinity.
- Patrick Jordan
Prayer for Married Couples
Last night at our monthly meeting we had a husband and wife couple who spoke on relationships. They passed out some prayer cards I thought would be great to share.
PRAYER FOR MARRIED COUPLES
Almighty and eternal God,
You blessed the union of married couples so that they might reflect the union of Christ with his Church:
look with kindness on them.
Renew their marriage covenant,
increase your love in them,
and strenghten their bond of peace
so that, with their children,
they may always rejoice in the gift of
your blessing.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
Update on the Lenten Tree
Well someone signed up for all of the 41 ornaments. Now it's just time to make them! Thursday, February 5th - 7pm is when the exchange will take place. Check your email for more information and the weekly reminders.
Thursday, January 22, 2009
The Lenten Tree Exchange
To help prepare our families for Lent, SGC is sponsoring “The Lenten Tree” ornament exchange. A symbol is placed on the Lenten tree each day during the forty days of Lent. The devotions begins on Ash Wednesday and continue each day through Holy Saturday, finishing with a devotion to celebrate the Resurrection of Our Lord on Easter Sunday. The tree includes 41 symbols or ornaments. Each participant chooses one of the symbols and makes 41 of the same ornament to represent the symbol. We’ll exchange ornaments at February’s MTO at the home of Jennie Punswick February 5th at 7pm. The ornaments are displayed on a small ornament tree that can be found online in a wide selection of materials and prices. The accompanying book is The Lenten Tree - Devotions for Children and Adults to prepare for Christ's Death and His Resurrection by Dean Lambert Smith.
A Lenten Tree is a special gift for godchildren, nieces and nephews and grandparents. Have one for each of your children—it will make a special keepsake and a tradition they can take to heir own families one day. Just sign up for additional ornaments to receive additional sets.
A simple Google search will give you ideas on your ornament; even the craft-challenged can do this! You are welcome to email me if you need additional ideas for how to create your ornament. If you are interested in the exchange, please email me back with your selection or selections.
Blessings,
Jennie Punswick
